It is with great pride that we will now recognize the first Friday of every month as Drink Iron City Day. We know what you are thinking: “Every day should be Drink Iron City Day.” Our rebuttal is that we have to start somewhere, and we will over time make every day Drink Iron City Day. So, to all the Iron City supporters out there, wherever you are, embrace the first Friday of each month as the day, and night, that Iron City will flow from the taps; bottles will be opened; and beer will be handed out to friends and foes alike. You see, Drink Iron City Fridays are not about our differences, but it is a time that we can all celebrate the goodness of our beer and embrace our similarities. And if at this point, you will not embrace this day as a complete dedication to drinking only Iron City, then promise us one thing: that on the first Friday of each month, annoy the bars and restaurants by asking them the following question every time you order a beer: “What is your Iron City special today?” Eventually ladies and gentleman, they will get the point because one thing is certain, and it is that Iron City fans are not going away. As the fan base grows, so will the demand for Iron City specials. Soon, we will not be asking for specials…we will be telling.

With the strong response we have had for St. Patrick’s Day T-Shirts, we are looking for someone who is in the business of making shirts; the business should be a local one. Furthermore, if you know someone who is good with graphics or design, point them our way; we will get their name on the shirt in exchange for their creative volunteerism. Also, we will reserve space on the shirt for people/businesses that have supported us and Iron City. So, if you are interested in adding your ‘logo’ or business to the t-shirt, let us know and we will provide this service at no cost. However, if you would want to lower the cost of the shirts for the community, donations to our ‘lock box’ t-shirt fund are up to you.

Valentine’s Day is upon us, and a post is in order that is related to February 14th. As many of us scramble for last minute gifts, flowers, reservations and ideas, we wish you the best of luck. For those of us in Pittsburgh, this could be merely a stepping stone to the most anticipated celebration of the year: St. Patrick’s Day. Yes, we will embrace our loved ones, exchange chocolate and cards on Feb14, but make no mistake: our sites are set on March 15, 2008.
So, we wish you a Happy Valentines Day, but are here to remind you to set Saturday the 15th aside in March. This day is approaching quick, and we will certainly have to represent Iron City. We are considering DrinkIronCity.com T-shirts that you can order for St. Patrick’s day; the question remains if there is a demand for this, so let us know.

I found this article and thought you all might appreciate it. It goes over some of the history, innovations and other facts about our beloved brewery.

Iron City Beer
Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania, USA probably is not the first place that comes to mind when you're talking about brewing. Yet the Pittsburgh Brewing Company has produced some very fine beers for the past 145 years.
The company's history can be traced back to 1855 when Edward Frauenheim and Leopold Vilsack first met. Their discussions eventually led to the founding of the Frauenheim and Vilsack Brewery in 1861. The new brewery was erected at Liberty Avenue and 34th Street - the present site of Pittsburgh Brewing Company.
Brewing was a popular industry in Pittsburgh's early years, and dozens of small neighbourhood breweries competed for the favour of the Steel City's thirsty blue-collar labourers....

Meeting the public

We all know of "mobile marketing". Things like the Coors Light Train that goes around town to town for big sporting events, and even the Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile. Well I've been racking my brain trying to think of something Iron City could do. How about an amphibious vehicle? Something that can go from land to water, which would really help in Pittsburgh, stopping at key locales and events, promoting Iron City. It could travel down to the Waterfront, all around downtown, up the Ohio...you get the point. It would obviously not be something that runs all the time, but it might have more of an impact than just setting up a metal bin full of ice and bottles at Margarita Mamas Saturday nights. It would be even better if it was a hover craft, but that might be a long shot. Any suggestions?

Here in the 'Burgh we remember the I. C. Light Amphitheater. Well times became tough and they had to surrender their naming rights. Now that things are looking a bit more positive for Iron City, what type of venue or place can they slap their name on? I was thinking that since Mellon Bank got bought out, a slot might be open for naming rites in the new Penguins arena. How would the Iron City Arena sound? Any other ideas?

What do our readers think should be the next step here at DrinkIronCity.com? We are always open for ideas of how we can support our local brewery, and the more we know what is on your mind, the better. We will make sure to give credit where it is due. The picture contest is going along great; it is actually going along so well, that Iron City took the idea and is doing the exact same concept on their MySpace page. Check it out at myspace.com/ironcitybeer. Unfortunately, we were not told about them doing the same thing, so we were not able to promote it; I can only hope they give us the heads up in the future.

Friday - 2 words, happy hour!! grab some co-workers (not literally) and head to your favorite bar for some beer specials, and make it an IC Light!!

Saturday - Penguins play at 7:30 in the Igloo. If your going to the game, stick with regular Iron City, it'll keep you warmer. If your watching the game, plenty of local sports bars are having game day iron city specials, so check them out and head over

Sunday - For the "Big Game", find a grille or a cook out to crash, and grab some Augustiner Dark. Nothing like steak, and an Auggie Dark. Delicious. After a hearty meal, support An American past time by drinking American Light. And lets hope Mr. Brady gets acquainted with Mr. Turf!

Monday - Walk off the night before. If you missed the Super Bowl, or had to work, kick back with some American Light, as always it's a great drink-it-all-day beer

Tuesday - Check out a show downtown, there's Sweeney Todd, or The Lion King. After head to Primanti's in Market Square and enjoy a great sandwich, and a tall IC Light

I was reading in the paper about how on top of the new PNC skyscraper, 3 PNC Plaza, the law firm Reed-Smith will be putting their logo on top of the building on the North and South sides. This trend is continuing throughout the city with other law firms on top of skyscrapers, and even UPMC is putting their logo, controversaly, on top of the USX Steel tower. Recently Heinz ketchup put back up their large lighted sign on the Sports and History museum in The Strip district. Wouldn't everyon like to see a large Iron City logo? Now since they do not have any real office space downtown, a sky scraper may be toough. But there is a large parking garage smack dab between the 2 stadiums on the North Shore. Plus that area will be getting more attention with the casino, and you even drive right past about the 10th story on route 279. How great of an addition would that be to the skyline?

While we like to steer clear of politics and advertising, some things are worth bringing up. Bubba's Ugly North Shore Bar and Grille is having a screw the drink tax happy hour special friday January 25th. They are charging $0.01 for certain drafts, and are boasting "take %10 of that!". All I can say is lets hope Iron City has a strong showing, and other bars follow suit.

Gotta be honest, I like this place. It's nestled right next to Heinz Field, and there's a lot going on right now on the North Shore. It's one of the few locations in the city where you can actually hail a cab, and parking is only $3. But that's not what we're here to talk about. So, went there to enjoy my favorite beer, and a hearty meal, and I got both. For a 20oz draft IC Light or Iron City, you're gonna pay $4, but that includes the Onorato Tax, and it's 20oz not 12. They also have them in bottles at $3.25. I was there over the weekend, and was unable to check out any happy hour specials, so if anyone has any information, please comment. But i recommend this place if you wana pump some iron, watch your cash flow, and enjoy a good meal.

A New Package?....

Not sure how many of you have seen the Augustiner box or packaging, but all i can say is that it reminds me a little of... Nickelodeon (see the pciture a few psosts down). So we're interested in seeing how people think the packaging should look like. Put that mouse paint to use, and send us any renditions you may have of a "new" craft beer style packaging of Augustiner.

Your 5 day iron city drinking forecast

Thursday - After a hard days work, slip out to your favorite sports bar for the Penguins - Flyers game. this is gonna be a hard hitting tough hockey game, so stick with regular iron city.

Friday - get a group of people together for happy hour, generally 5-7pm in any establishment throughout the city. it's gonna be a long night, so stick with IC Light

Saturday - you probably got some work around the house to do, maybe a trip to home depot, so grab some American Light. It's a great drink-it-all-day beer

Sunday - hey, it's gonna be around 40 degrees, light snow, and the NHL All Star game is on. why not get a 30 pack of Augustiner, fire up the BBQ, and have a little winter cook out for the game. The craftiness of Augustiner goes great with a good steak

Monday - leftover day, although most of the beer might be gone, enjoy the last few Auggies or Americans, you got laying around. enjoy the day, as it is supposed to be near 50 degrees

Love your site, thanks. Looking forward to reading updates as I am in the other burg (Harrisburg) and cant always be kept up on IC news, especially Old German. I’ve actually cultivated a cult fan base here in HBG of people who have tried—and dug—old german, but as soon as I did that and they gave me orders to fill on my trips out to Pburg, I couldn’t find it anymore! Bad timing, I hope it becomes available again.

Also, I think the brewery should bring back “Robin Hood Cream Ale.” Remember that one? Cool can, good brew, cheap. There is bound to be a cream ale resurgence soon, and this would be one time that PBC is on the FRONT end of the resurgence/fad, rather than following along – such as the case w/honey brown.

where have all the 40's gone?

recently i talked with a loyal iron city patron, and resident of the local working community of the Christy Park, White Oak, North Versailles area. he was knowledgeable of our site, and wants to know what happened to the iron city and ic light 40 ounce bottles that used to just be available at bars. he said he used to be able to go in to the local pubs such as Hoots, famous for it's fish fry, or Vincents Pizza, and have a 40 ounce tall boy of iron with their meals. if anyone can offer any knowledge or condolences, he'd much appreciate it.

Malones, we salute you

so i visited my favorite local bar friday night, Malones in Castle Shannon, for the Pens game. i was the first Pens fan there, ready for a perfect match of local beer and sports. Naturally I asked, " whats the drink special for the game?" the bartender replied, "what do you want the special to be?" I firmly replied, "iron city". well, although the game did not turn out great, Crosby got hurt, and they lost 3-0, I'd say 65% of the bar was drinking iron city products. Malones gets our iron men approval, and we hope more bars will follow this trend, and allow its patrons to support its hometown brew.

Well we can’t say for certain the location, but February 22, 2008 will be the first Drink Iron City gathering. We are going to start it at 7pm and see where it takes us as the night progresses. I talked with Primanti’s and they don’t run Iron City specials on Friday nights. We like the station square and downtown locations because of the proximity to public transportation, taxis, and hotels. At this point, we are open for suggestions and whoever wants to help.
On another note, I stopped by my distributor to pick up a case of Augustiner. Bottles were not available, so the 30 pack of cans had to due. It came to about $20.60, and I am enjoying one as I type. It is a good beer, and I can taste the ‘craftness’ in it (which is actually a good thing). I would rather be drinking it in a frozen glass, but then again, what Iron City don’t you want to drink out of a frozen glass? My recommendation: if you can find it, try it.
Lastly, the weekend is here, and as colleges are back in session, have some fun. Remember, support the brew that supports you.

Palomino Restaurant

Went to The Palomino Restaurant in the Gateway Tower downtown on Thursday for a family style happy hour. The happy hour starts at 5 pm, and as normal runs for 2 hours. Appetizers are half off, and of course they have drink specials. Coors Light, Bud Light and Miller Light were $3 for a 16 oz draft. Where's the Iron City you ask? Not on special, but a bruising $5 a bottle. If I was not with my family,I probably would have demanded some type of explanation for this. And these are their every day happy hour specials, so it's not that they were featuring a specific brand. Lets all hope that Iron City and beloved president Timmy take some notice to situations like these. Especially when a place like the Palomino, one with a lot of out of town foot traffic from the nearby Hilton, are not including the home town brews on their daily specials.
